Satorido Kempo, a contemplative martial art.
Satorido Kempo translates as the 'way of awakening through martial arts'. This means that, through the practice of martial arts, we can wake up to the world as it is. We can become aware of ourselves on new and profound levels, and confront the places in ourselves where we hold fear and anger; the places where we are stuck.
Satorido Kempo combines the soft, yielding and effective martial arts of Taichi Chuan and Aikido, with the strong and decisive martial arts of Nippon Kempo and various styles of Shaolin and Wudan Kung Fu. It also contains the Taoist concepts of 'path' and contemplation of seeming paradoxes, as well as the Buddhist philosophies of awakened mind, interdependence, impermanence and loving-kindness.
Through training in Satorido, an individual can not only gain the knowledge and skill to engage multiple partners in martial practice, but also the wisdom and insight to engage these skills in real-life settings. Satorido Kempo trains not only the body, but the mind and spirit, as well.
